Jury Duty

Jury service is one of the privileges of our system of justice. All citizens have an obligation to serve to insure that jury panels are an impartial cross-section of our residents. Morgan County residents selected for jury duty serve a four month term. Once you have received the jury questionnaire, please promptly complete the questionnaire and return it to our office. If you have a hardship or disability, you are required to submit a doctor's statement to support your request to be excused from jury service. Please ask your physician to send this statement to our office. Medical excuses can be faxed to (573) 378-5356 or mailed to 211 East Newton Street Suite 4 Versailles, MO 65084. If you are selected for jury duty, you will receive a summons from our office with instructions of when and where to appear. Please bring the summons with you when you report for jury service. Please call our jury call-in number at (573) 378-2509 any time after 5:00 p.m. on the evening before the date of the trial to check the status of the case. The jury call-in number will advise you whether you need to appear. Proper attire (no shorts, obscene t-shirts, halter tops, etc.) is required. If you need an accommodation for a disability, please call (573) 378-4413 at least one week in advance of your report date. You may also use this number in case of an emergency while you are serving.

We would like to thank you for your involvement in the judicial process. Our goal is to make this process as simple as possible and to respect the time and effort you have taken to serve your fellow citizens. The jury system plays a vital role in the democratic process of the United States. The jury serves as a link between the courts and the people and also as a guard against possible oppression by the government. The jury provides a means of settling disputes between citizens (civil proceedings) as well as between an individual and the state (criminal proceedings). Because of these roles, the jury is one of the foundations of liberty in our country.
